The Dunnellon Tiny Mites Cheer team is hosting a fundraiser event Sunday, Sept. 25, at LaRue’s Ice Cream Parlour in Dunnellon from 1 to 5 p.m. There will be a live raffle drawing at 5 p.m.
Three tickets are $5, and seven tickets are $10; an arm’s length is $20; 20 percent of all ice purchases are donated to the squad.
The raffle basket will include donations from several local restaurants and businesses.
LaRue’s is located at 11298 SW 20th Ave.

The Whistle Stop Cafe returns to the Greater Dunnellon HIstorical Society Train Depot on Friday, Oct. 7.
Food is served from 5-8 p.m. Adam Martin takes the stage for musical entertainment from 7-9 p.m.
The Cafe will serve fried green tomatoes, cubans and gourmet grilled cheese, gluten-free veggie wraps and hobo stew.
There’s a $5 cover charge plus the cost of food.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and you are invited to attend a Women’s Wellness Day on Saturday, Oct. 8, in Dunnellon.
The Women’s Club of Dunnellon and Michelle-O-Gram will be hosting a mammography event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its clubhouse at 11756 Cedar St.
Michelle-O-Gram is an organization that assists women without insurance or other funds to obtain screening/diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds.
The big pink bus, Maven Mobile Mammogram Unit, will have their mobile mammogram suite at our clubhouse to conduct mammograms. This is an easy and convenient way for women to complete their annual exam as no referral is necessary.
Advanced appointments are requested and can be made by contacting Michelle-O-Gram’s Sherry Roberts at 352-489-2121.
Maven Mobile Mammography will send exam results to a woman’s physician and submit the bill to their insurance provider. If no insurance is available, Michelle-O-Gram will assist with the expense.
Other local organizations who aid and/or provide services for women and children will also be there to provide information. These participants include Annie Johnson, Boys & Girls Club of Dunnellon, Family Hope & Pregnancy Center, Footprints on My Heart, Rainbow River Hearing & Balance, Food 4 Kids and Kimberly’s Center for Child Protection.

The Race, which is sponsored by the Dunnellon Chamber and Business Association, is seeking duck adopters, sponsors and donors. The proceeds of the race, which features customized wooden ducks floating down the Rainbow River at Swampy’s Bar & Grille, will go to Will Power Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Believe in Santa, Greater Dunnellon Historical Society and Family Hope Resource & Pregnancy Center.

One Rake at a Time, a local nonprofit which aims to restore the Rainbow River by removing invasive hydrilla and planting native eelgrass, was recently awarded a $150,000 state grant to conduct a technical study on the river.
The organization, led by Art Jones, is now hosting meetings every Wednesday at The Church of the Holy Faith community room in Dunnellon. The meetings will feature guest speakers and will provide information about One Rake’s project and how volunteers can help.
This week’s first meeting featured a guest presentation on otters on the Rainbow River.
The meetings are free and open to anyone.

Titled “The ABC of Dementia,” the presentation will feature Debbie Selsavage, a certified dementia practitioner and President of Coping with Dementia LLC. The workshop will explain the nature of various forms of dementia, what to expect from this progressive disease, steps to becoming a more proficient and less-stressed care partner, and what resources are available in Citrus County for families living with dementia.

The Dunnellon Country Quilters meet at 12:30 p.m. every Monday at the First United Methodist Church on West State Road 40 in Dunnellon.
The group makes patriotic quilts for veterans, pillowcases for Shands Children’s Cancer Center, prayer quilts for the First United Methodist Church and quilts for the Citrus County Resource Center. We also have classes for different projects and go on road trips and quilt shows. Every third Monday of the month, we hold our business meeting and share what we have made.

The First Methodist Church of Dunnellon is starting a free program called “Forget-Me-Not.” We offer three hours of respite care for caregivers of early dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the College of Central Florida will host a Hispanic Heritage Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala.

On the fourth Saturday of each month, food and basic home needs will be available at North Oak Church in Citrus Springs at 10 a.m., until supplies run out.
Enter the church property from North Citrus Springs Boulevard and a supply of paper products, detergents, personal items and more will be brought to your car. Drive around, following the driveway, and food items will also be brought to the vehicle. Then, exit on to North Elkcam Boulevard.
Items vary based on availability. Anyone who has a need is welcome and there is no charge.

Tickets are now on sale for the Ocala Recreation and Parks Department’s first annual “Legends of the Fort” at Fort King National Historic Landmark, 3925 E. Fort King St., Saturday, Oct. 8, and Sunday, Oct. 9, 4 to 8 p.m.
Visitors will step back into history to meet the legends of Fort King’s past. A one-hour guided lantern tour will provide tales from the past while guests learn about the grounds of Ocala’s Seminole War historic site. Group tours will depart every 10 minutes. Old-fashioned games such as checkers, horseshoes, cornhole, and live music will round out the evening of fun. Refreshments will also be available for purchase.
Tickets must be purchased online. Walk-up ticket sales will not be available the night of the event. General admission is $5 per participant. Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased here.

Visual art featuring words will take the spotlight in the College of Central Florida Webber Gallery’s “Next Text” exhibition on view Oct. 3-27. The collection of work by multicultural artists from across the country will showcase an intriguing display of storytelling through the use of text in the visual arts. The exhibition was curated by CF Professor of Art Tyrus Clutter and Sheila Goloborotko, an associate professor of printmaking at University of North Florida, whose artwork has been featured in past exhibitions at the Webber Gallery.
“We are excited to bring artwork from nationally known artists to our campus and our community,” said Amanda Lyon, Webber Gallery coordinator. “Many of the artists included in this exhibition have worked as visual arts professors and faculty at universities in Florida and throughout the United States.”
The community is invited to an opening reception on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA) is hosting its annual charity golf tournament Oct. 14 at the Candler Hills Golf Club at On Top of the World in Ocala.
The tourney is a major fundraiser for the FNGLA Endowed Research Fund at SHARE and is held in conjunction with FNGLA’s Landscape Show.
“Golfers loved the course at Candler Hills,” said tournament chair Ed Bravo, Big Trees Plantation. “We tried it for the first time in 2021 and are returning there for another great golfing experience in October.”
The tournament also offers opportunities for attendees to make important industry contacts and catch up on the latest business intelligence.
